What is Ambien (Zolpidem)?

Ambien is a sedative medication with hypnotic properties. Ambien is a prescription medication used to treat insomnia and other sleep disorders.

The medication is produced in a form of immediate-release and extended-release tablets. The immediate-release form of Ambien works rapidly, helping a patient to fall asleep. The extended-release form has a first layer that rapidly dissolves to help a person to fall asleep; the second layer of the tablet works slowly in the body, helping to stay asleep. The choice of the form of the medication is based on the condition of a patient.

Zolpidem is usually used for short-term period of treatment (from two to six weeks). The medication has been clinically tested and proven to be effective for sleep initiation problems.

Ambien is produced by Sanofi-Aventis U.S. LLC in the form of 5 and 10 mg film coated tablets.
